NFL Training Camp 2021 primer: Key info, dates, locations

Image
What is training camp? Training Camp is an extensive ramp-up period that will include two practices a day, also known as "two-a-days," scrimmages, drills, team meetings with coaches and weight training. Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the first three days must contain zero contact. Days 4 and 5 allow players to practice full speed in "spiders and shells" (helmets and light practice gear); Day 6 is a mandatory day off, and Day 7 permits players to begin conducting fully-padded practices. When is training camp this year? For the first time in NFL history, there will be a unified start date for training camp, with 29 clubs reporting on July 27. The Cowboys and Steelers, who will square off in this year's Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 5, are eligible to report as early as July 21. The reigning Super Bowl champion Buccaneers can report as early as July 24; Tampa Bay faces Dallas in the regular-season opener on Sept. 9. How big are teams' rosters during train

How 2021 NFL schedule was created with additional games for next season

Of all the overblown NFL events, the nuttiness around the release of the schedule is particularly stunning to me. Fans have known their 2021 opponents for four months. The order of the games, plus television details—that’s all that’s left. I lost count at 33 different hosts/analysts/reporters on NFL Network and ESPN covering the schedule release Wednesday night, and that’s after CBS and FOX morning shows broke down the Week 1 schedules for each network. The order of the games, I don’t care about. But how the sausage is made, that interests me. That’s what you’ll learn today. First, a few words about the voracious expansion of the NFL calendar. Mark Cuban is fond of saying that NFL one day will have a day of reckoning for wanting to own every part of the year, and for being the 800-pound gorilla and crushing other sports. Could be. But I don’t see this tectonic shift of the NFL calendar over the last three decades getting tamer. How did we get here, to the point that the NFL gets boffo

The 2021 NFL season is four months away, but on Wednesday, May 12, the NFL started releasing the schedule. The full schedule will be released at 8 p.m. ET, but in the 8 a.m. hour, the league released the schedule for Week 1. ABC, CBS, and FOX all announced the first weekend of football in their morning shows. The Bucs get the traditional home opener for a Super Bowl champion, and we get a fun one with them. Tampa will host the Cowboys in what should mark Dak Prescott’s first regular season game since fracturing his ankle last season. The injury proved how valuable Prescott is to the Cowboys and expectations will be sky high in his return. The other two prime time games include Bears at Rams on Sunday Night Football and then Ravens at Raiders on Monday Night Football. One of the best games on the slate will be Sunday afternoon and likely a mostly national game on CBS as the Chiefs host the Browns to open the season. This is a potential playoff preview right out of the gate. Here’s a ful

The Most Improved Teams of the 2021 NFL Offseason

Image
The whirlwind of NFL free agency and the draft have finally begun to wind down, and in this quiet time before offseason training activities and training camps, we are left with only our thoughts about how our teams fared through it all. It was once again a strange NFL offseason affected by COVID-19; contracts were affected by the loss of revenue from the 2020 season and the salary cap of $182.5 million, down from $198.2 million in 2020. Once again, the annual scouting combine was canceled due to the pandemic, though teams were able to reap the benefits of players participating in their schools’ pro days and conduct interviews virtually. There were a few splashy free agencies, including the New England Patriots, who spent almost as much in two days as they had in the previous 10 years. (More on that coming up.) There were also some head-scratching moves, such as the Oakland Raiders essentially disassembling their entire offensive line. The NFL draft introduced a few generational players
